WHEN TO CLIMB
Kilimanjaro is very popular with both experienced hikers and first time adventurers. Scaling the mountain requires no technical skills or equipment, such as rope, harness, crampons or ice axe.
The first question for mountaineers is when is the best time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro? Here is the answer.
Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed all year round! Generally, the main (high) seasons are from July to October and from December to February. These months coincide with the dry seasons in Tanzania.
• January and February are great times to climb Kilimanjaro. The weather is relatively warm and visibility is good. However, it is the busiest time at the mountain.
• March to May is the long rainy season. There are very few people on the mountain and the trail conditions can be very muddy, wet and snowy.
• June is a transitional period that is characterized by low visibility and cold temperatures. It is considered as the start of the climbing season.
• July to October is busy period on the mountain. It is dry, but the temperatures are still relatively cold. Visibility is great.
• November is a short rainy season. Precipitation is moderate compared to the long rainy season. Only few visitors climb Kilimanjaro during this month.
• December is a crowded time due to the holiday season. But the short rains can often run into this month.
Climbing during the High Season
The greatest advantage of climbing during the high season is that you can stay dry. Sure, you can always get some rains throughout the year, especially in the forests of moorlands. However, the precipitation is low and infrequent. By staying dry, you stay comfortable and the overall trek will be more enjoyable. Removing the stress of being wet and cold also increases your chance of proper acclimatization. During the dry season, the views are better, with clear and sunny skies. The disadvantage is that the trails have many climbers, which can take away the feeling of being on a big, remote mountain. However, some visitors look forward to socializing with other groups in the camps. Not surprisingly, most people choose to climb during the dry season.
Climbing during the Low Season
The prospect of having the mountain for you only is what draws people to climb during the low season. The mountain is very empty and it is possible to be the only party at a campsite. This quietness and solitude is what many people seek when going outdoors. Secondly, although it does rain quite a lot during the low season, most of the time the rains arrive in the afternoon. With Kilimanjaro’s trekking schedule, most of the hiking can be done in the mornings, which means that the time spent on trail while it rains can be minimized. Also, precipitation creates snow, which is not a bad thing. Kilimanjaro is best displayed during the rainy season. The most beautiful sights of the mountain often are enjoyed in the mornings, after the snow.
No matter when you climb, you have a chance to see the starry nights over the mountain. Watch some awesome videos on YouTube with fireballs, shooting stars and lights above Mount Kilimanjaro! It is amazing!
